Empowering People ... Providing Information ... Striving for Justice


  BACKGROUND

The Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) is an autonomous, charitable & educational trust, established by trust deed and registered under the Welfare Organisations Act [93/67] in 1984 (now Private Voluntary Organisations Act [Chapter 17:05).

It was established to meet an expressed need to improve the accessibility of legal and information services to all sections of the population. Programmes undertaken by the LRF are based on the understanding that human rights in Zimbabwe can be advanced by facilitating access to the legal system.

The LRF believes that disadvantaged people, particularly women, can be empowered to assert their rights through the legal system when they are provided with information and advice.

  OURVISION


is to facilitate access to justice through:

  • Empowering citizens through development of an assertive and legally literate populace;
  • Improving Providing legal assistance and solutions to problems of marginalized people;
  • Achieving positive transformationof, and building confidence in, the justice delivery system;
  • Being a primary and major source of legal information and material for the public in general and the legal profession in particular;
  • Becoming a major player in the development of law and legislation in Zimbabwe;
  • Becoming a leading player in championing and campaigning for respect for human rights;
  • Creating awareness of rights by those in authority and campaigning for respect and promotion of the rule of law; and
  • Building an effective and efficient organisation with sound policies, and which is able to grow and adapt in a changing environment.

  OUR MISSION


is to achieve our vision by:

  • Educating people on their rights and responsibilities, and mobilising them to access their rights;
  • Producing legal reference and educational materials;
  • Providing training to community leaders and grassroots education through schools;
  • Providing legal assistance to marginalized people through well-equipped legal assistance centres;
  • Working with authorities and institutions responsible for justice delivery to strengthen the justice delivery system, identify and remove loopholes, and train and equip officials responsible for the administration and delivery of justice;
  • Engaging in test case litigation and aggressively pursuing lobbying, advocacy and publicity campaigns for the test case programme;
  • Using lobbying and advocacy to raise awareness of human rights and to promote a human rights culture and observance of the rule of law; and
  • Developing the human and material resources necessary to accomplish our aims and objectives.

  OUR STRATEGIES


The objectives of the LRF are pursued through the following programmes:

  • Legal Services
  • Legal Education
  • Publications
  • Advocacy and Research
  • Through these programmes, legal awareness is improved by the provision of advice and publications.
  • The services provided by the public legal system (i.e. the courts, police, prisons, etc) are supported and improved through education and training.
  • Resources are made available for the legal profession. in addition, the LRF provides support and assistance to other organisations and institutions in Zimbabwe and the region pursuing similar objectives, where resources permit.
