Empowering People ... Providing Information ... Striving for Justice

  OUR ACTIVITIES/SERVICES

LRF's direct services to the public target the rural and urban poor, disadvantaged women, scholars and the general public. Services to the legal system target law students, legal practitioners (particularly newly-qualified practitioners), the courts, law enforcement agencies and sections of the general public.

The Legal Services Programme operates legal advice centres in five urban, five suburban and 19 rural areas. These centres are staffed by over 35 trained paralegals, who advice and educate their communities on legal issues.
The LRF takes up cases of general public interest or those cases, which establish new legal precedents and protect the human rights of Zimbabweans.

The Legal Education Programme includes a variety of activities, such as:

  • Community education
  • Workshops on human rights issues for secondary school teachers
  • Workshops for local and traditional leaders
  • Workshops for court officials and other judicial officers
  • Radio and other media programmes in the major languages.

The Legal Publications Unit publishes legal textbooks, Zimbabwe Law Reports, legal periodicals and other referencetitles. The titles include:
  • Guides to Criminal Law, Delict, And Administrative Law - G. Feltoe
  • Civil Practice Handbook - M. Welsh
  • Criminal Procedure In Zimbabwe - J. Reid Rowland
  • Constitutional Law of Zimbabwe - G. Linington
  • A Guide to Law and Practice of Conveyancing in Zimbabwe - M. L. Mhishi
A wide range of pamphlets is produced in the three major languages on various aspects of the law. The topics include:

AIDS and the Law, Arrest, Bail, Birth Certificates, Declaration of Rights, Domestic Violence, Entry, Search & Seizure, Inheritance (Gen) Law, Inheritance (Cust) Law, Law and the Courts, Legal Age of Majority, Marriage and the Law, Sexual Offences, Summons, Vehicle Accidents, Women and Rape

The Advocacy and Research Programme includes Libraries at each Legal Project Centre with extensive collections of current legal texts, law reports and electronic human rights collections. For example, LRG lobbies for family courts and changes in legislation.
